A few months ago Kathy's 6th Grade class had the local media spotlight when they invited Canadian director, Rob Stewart, to come to the Marianas and help save the local shark population. What they didn't expect is that he would answer them and make them the focus of his next film project!
During his visit to the Northern Marianas, Stewart spent time getting to know the kids, getting to know the sharks in Saipan's waters, and lobbying local lawmakers to change the laws to effectively ban the sale, use, and possession of all shark products in the NMI.
Thanks to the efforts of the kids, local lawmakers and Rob Stewart, the CNMI became the second place on the planet to enact a ban on shark fins. While the CNMI has received global recognition for its actions, Kathy's class has earned accolades from people here in Saipan and around the globe.
Here's a short video of Stewart's trip to the Marianas that aired on local news station KSPN 2 and wraps up the whole story in less than five minutes.
Check out the video on YouTube.
